Rick Bragg

Now a noted journalist, Rick Bragg grew up in stark poverty in rural Alabama, abused by his father, and nurtured by his mother. With his mother’s encouragement, he was able to pursue a career in writing, at first for a local newspaper, and then for more noted newspapers, such as The New York Times. This memoir, All Over but the Shoutin’  (1997) is in homage to his mother.

Journalists/Journalism

Journalism was Bragg’s ticket out of a hard-scrabble life that appeared to be his future in Alabama. He was not the only one saved by this profession.

Mothers and Sons

Bragg’s love and respect for his mother were such that his first real dream once he realized he could succeed at journalism was to save up enough money to buy a house for her, a house that would be her very own.

Poverty

Given the times and Bragg’s father’s alcoholism, deep-seated poverty was Bragg’s environment as he grew up. He knew that others around him referred to him and his family as “white trash,” and he bore the shame of that name-calling with difficulty.
